Two places to start
British Council LearnEnglish Kids offers free games, songs, stories and activities for children aged 5 to 12. Its getting-started page groups materials by needs such as vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing.
Cambridge English learning activities include online tasks, worksheets, picture books and flashcards. Its young-learner resources include Pre A1, A1 and A2 materials. These labels describe the resources, not a level your child has earned by opening them.
Match the resource to the task
| What you want to practise | A starting point | What to look at together |
|---|---|---|
| Words for familiar objects | British Council word games | Can your child match the word and picture? |
| Reading or writing on paper | Cambridge worksheets | Can your child understand the instruction? |
| Words in a scene | Cambridge picture books | Which objects can your child describe? |
Choose British Council when browsing by a particular language skill is easiest for you. Start with Cambridge when you want downloadable materials or activities grouped by its young-learner levels. These are choices of supplementary resources; a worksheet collection is not a teacher-led course.
Try one resource before collecting more
For a first attempt, choose a familiar topic such as food. Open one activity and read its instructions yourself. Let your child try, then note where help was needed: the instruction, the vocabulary or the answer format.
Keep the activity link and that short note together. Next time, change the part that caused difficulty instead of moving immediately to a new website. See choosing an activity level for a way to separate language difficulty from unfamiliar instructions.
